The Wildlife World Barn Owl Box has been developed jointly with experienced owl conservationists to ensure it provides a safe and suitable nest site for breeding barn owls. It is a new attractive barn-shaped design which uses lightweight yet durable materials to give barn owls a long-lasting nest site which is easier to install than heavier alternatives.

  • Handmade from solid FSC timber and recycled agriculural plastic
  • Slow-seasoned timber negates the need for chemical, stains or artificial preservatives
  • Generous sized front platform and flat roof top for landing area/ fledgling wing exercise
  • Deep interior space for chick safety
  • Large front inspection door with bolt
  • Drilled floor for drainage and ventilation
  • Fitted with camera clip (a camera is a legal way to monitor this protected species without disturbing them)
  • suggested camera: Hi-Spec Colour & Infrared Camera Kit

Siting Barns owls are birds of open countryside (not woodland). Therefore the box should be positioned on a tree in a hedgerow, on a tree in the open or in a building or barn or at the very outside edge of woodland. The box should be placed high 2.5m - 5m ideally to face east, NE or SE and there should be a clear flight path to the box.

Barn owls are particularly vulnerable to being hit by traffic because of their low level hunting style, so they should not be encouraged to nest within 1/2 mile of major roads.

The presence of vole rich grasslands and less intensively managed habitat is the key to success in selecting a nest box site. They have a long breeding season and may have several broods. To avoid all possibility of disturbance only clean the box from November to February.

Other species which may use the barn owl box include tawny owls, little owls, stock doves, jackdaws and squirrels.
